The Many Hats of a Realtor
I often get questions from my friends and family – even clients sometimes – about what a Realtor actually does for their customers? Are we just there to make a bunch of money and unlock homes for you?
I decided it would be fun to see how many different facets of the Real Estate Business Realtors actually help their clients with. While touring and meeting MN First Time Buyers, these are some of the “jobs” we have to do in order to make sure you buy the right property.
*Disclaimer: This is for entertainment purposes only. For professional advice in any of these areas, please consult a licensed professional in that field.
- Appraiser – People obviously want Realtors to help them determine how much their home is worth.
- Inspector – Whether it’s a leaky pipe or new roof, there’s almost always something wrong with a pre-existing property.
- Contractor – How much is a new bathtub gonna cost me?? What kind of tile could you put in the kitchen?
- School Superintendent – School Districts are important to a lot of families in MN. Although it’s hard to know a lot of in-depth information on all the schools in the area.
- Civil Engineer – Everything from roadways, curbs, sidewalks, power lines etc.
- Historian – What used to be here before the new development? How old is the street?
- Tax Expert – Real Estate has a lot of tax benefits, which is a great reason to own property. We have to know some of the general rules and regulations.
- Legal Advisor – To Arbitrate or Litigate?
- Expert Negotiator – Purchase Price, Closing Date, Seller Paid Closing Costs, Inspection Contingencies; it’s all in the negotiating.
- Banker – How much can you afford to pay?
- Fortune Teller – What will the house sell for in the future? What will the bank accept on a foreclosure? Good questions!
- Counselor – Real Estate is not just numbers, it’s about people and their lives. This is an important part of the job which can create a wonderful experience even in times of hardship.
- Salesperson – We are selling something, aren’t we? It pays to make things sound “Hot, Hot, Hot!”
- Secretary – Lots of paperwork and phone calls to make, and if you can’t afford an assistant (yeah right!) then we’ve gotta do it!
- Mortgage Broker – What’s the best type of loan for your situation.
- Marketer – When a listing agent puts your house on the MARKET, they are MARKETING IT!
- Telemarketer – When we have to make cold calls, it can be very humbling. Don’t be angry, please!! We’re just trying to see if we can help you. That’s all.

You forgot one: Transportation service.
All too often, at the end of the day, my clients will say something like “At least we got to ride around in a Huimmber all day…”
While this is very frustrating at times, it is somewhat humorous. Honestly, I would drive my buyers from Branson to Nantucket if it meant getting a sale.
Great post! I have only been blogging for a couple of months and your advice here really has helped!
